Film and Impact Initiative
From Here is a feature documentary film and long-running impact initiative examining belonging, creative, and democratic participation through storytelling. The film follows diasporic young adults coming of age in Berlin and New York, two cosmopolitan world capitols caught in the context of rising nationalism and anti-immigrant sentiment, and was broadcast on PBS/WORLD Channel’s acclaimed America ReFramed series. Developed over more than fifteen years, the project was produced through close collaboration among creative activists, filmmakers, educators, and organizers in Germany and the United States, reflecting a deeply transatlantic approach to questions of migration and democracy. From its inception, From Here was conceived not only as a film, but as a tool for public engagement. Over time, it has grown into a sustained impact initiative that combines screenings, facilitated dialogue, education, and partnerships to challenge exclusionary narratives about migration and national identity.
Location: Transnational
Years: 2007-present
Themes: Migration, Belonging, Citizenship, Activism, Creative Resistance
Together, these elements position storytelling as a crucial pathway to cultivate power and agency, support learning and shared language, and foster dialogue across differences.
Since its release, From Here has been used as a catalyst for dialogue and learning across diverse geographic and institutional contexts.
To date, the initiative has included:
In addition to institutional settings, the project has been widely engaged in grassroots and community-based contexts, including public libraries, high schools, youth programs, community centers, and local advocacy spaces. These engagements often prioritize facilitated discussion, connecting the film's narratives to lived experience, local organizing, and civic participation.
The film was broadcast nationally on U.S. public television through America ReFramed (PBS / WORLD) and has received awards including Best Feature Documentary at the New York Human Rights Film Festival. The project was a finalist in the Social Impact Media Awards 2025, underscoring its effectiveness as a tool for dialogue, education, and social change.
By pairing film with intentional facilitation and education, the initiative supports audiences in engaging complex political issues without defaulting to "us vs. them" frameworks. This approach has proven especially effective in polarized contexts, where dialogue, empathy, and shared understanding are urgently needed.

FROM HERE will finally have it’s homecoming to Berlin. The festival will host both two socially distanced screenings in person with live q&a’s, and limited digital tickets online as part their amazing program.
