Belonging Beyond Borders

A global network for bold visions on migration

Belonging Beyond Borders (BBB) is a transnational network rooted in the understanding that we all inherently belong — to the Earth, to life, and to one another. Migration is a natural expression of this belonging, yet it has become a central wedge issue used by authoritarian movements to undermine democracy, human rights, and dignity. BBB brings together organizers, funders, and cultural leaders to break silos between migration, democracy, climate, racial, and gender justice — building shared frameworks and transnational collaboration to counter exclusion and strengthen democratic futures.

Why this matters

Migration is not only a question of borders or humanitarian response — it is a central fault line of contemporary democracy. Across regions, migrants and racialized communities are increasingly used as scapegoats in moments of democratic backsliding, economic insecurity, and climate disruption. Exclusionary border regimes, voter suppression, and racialized narratives of “belonging” undermine democratic legitimacy itself. At the same time, climate breakdown is intensifying displacement while being weaponized by authoritarian and populist movements. Too often, these dynamics are addressed in isolation. Belonging Beyond Borders exists to weave these struggles together — linking migration, democracy, climate action, and broader movements for social justice— and to develop shared frameworks that help movements respond to these interconnected crises with coherence, solidarity, and imagination.

What we do

  • Democracy-centered movement building: Convening organizers, funders, and cultural actors to address migration as a democratic issue — including political participation, representation, and shared power.
  • Narrative & framework development: Co-creating texts, concepts, and shared language that connect migration, belonging, democracy, and ecological interdependence.
  • Cross-issue weaving: Intentionally linking migrant justice with climate justice, racial justice, and gender justice to counter scapegoating and siloed responses.
  • Transnational infrastructure: Building durable relationships and strategic alignment across regions, sectors, and movements.

KEY IMPACTS

  • Democracy-focused migration framing: Advanced a belonging-centered analysis that positions migration as a core democratic issue, influencing how partners, funders, and movement actors understand political participation, legitimacy, and inclusion.
  • Transnational convening in Cyprus: Convened 20 movement leaders, organizers, and funders in Cyprus for a multi-day gathering focused on weaving migration, democracy, climate, and narrative strategies — laying the groundwork for ongoing collaboration and shared political analysis.
  • Original conceptual and narrative texts: Developed and circulated a body of shared texts and frameworks articulating belonging, interdependence, and democratic renewal — used internally by the network and externally by partners to shape strategy, messaging, and program design.
  • Cross-movement alignment: Strengthened connections between migrant justice, climate justice, racial justice, and gender justice actors, helping break silos and build coordinated responses to authoritarianism, exclusion, and ecological crisis.
